PAVLOVSK ENSEMBLE

Outstanding ensemble of the end XVIII – the beginnings of XIX centuries, a years residence of emperor Paul I and its families. One of the largest in the Europe landscape parks - its area of 600 hectares.

The ensemble of a palace and park was created within 50 years on coast of the twisting river Slavjanka. Architects C.Kameron, D.Kvarengi, A.Voronihin, K.Rossi, sculptors M.Kozlovsky, I.Martos, I.Prokofiev, F.Gordeyev and other's.

Formation of collections of the Pavlovsk palace is connected with travel of it's owners across the Europe per 1781-1782. Visiting workshops of known masters, they got and ordered pictures, furniture, bronze products, silk fabrics, porcelain services, have brought a plenty of an antique sculpture from Italy, and also have received gifts from royal court yard of the Europe.

In a museum the magnificent collection of Russian portrait, picturesque and graphic views of Pavlovsk are presented. Living rooms of Empress Maria Fedorovna trimmed in the beginning of XIX century by architects D.Kvarengi and A.Voronihin are again opened after long-term restoration surprising on beauty and the harmonies.

PAVLOVSK PALACE

The elegant gold-white palace constructed on high side of river Slavjanka, is visible even from distant points of park and city. Its three-tier central case topped by a flat dome on sixty four columns, - the earliest on time of construction and the most refined on furnish. It is created by C.Kameron in 80th years of XVIII century. Colonnades of the rounded off galleries connected the central case to service one-storied cases, forming a smart court yard in the form of a wide horseshoe.

After Paul's I introduction on throne Pavlovsk became the imperial residence. In this connection in 90th years of XVIII century the architect of Century It is transitory considerably has expanded a palace. It has erected the second floors above service cases, has attached to them two new ïîëóöèðêóëüíûõ a wing, almost closed a smart court yard. On one floor galleries-colonnades have grown also.

V.Brenna decorated facades of again built cases a stucco molding: monograms and crowns of owners of a palace, images of a military armor and trophies. And only in end faces wings it puts the four-columned portals as though opening entrance on a smart parade-ground. Such composite reception has allowed to connect new and old buildings in uniform ensemble.

In the beginning of XIX century A.Voronihin and D.Kvarengi have finished furnish of facades of a palace from “Own garden”. So there was a marble porch with balustrades, a balcony, the glazed semicircle of "Small lamp". In 1806-1807 P.Gonzaga covered with frescos a wall of the gallery turned to river. On it arcades leaving afar and ladders of majestic buildings are represented by filled by light. This gallery has entered into history of Russian art under the name of “Gonzaga's Gallery”.

In 1822 K.Rossi placed above “Gonzaga's Gallery” library with arch windows and busts of philosophers between them. Creation of library had been completed formation of palace ensemble.

PAVLOVSK PARK

The Pavlovsk park already for a long time uses glory of the best landscape park in the Europe. Poetical and infinitely various, it, according to the French writer of the beginning of XIX century Sent-More, answers "to all tastes and all moods of soul". "That a step a new picture in opinion of yours " - so the Russian poet of Century V.Tzshukovsky responded about walk on Pavlovsk park.

Now, analyzing the reasons of charm of park, main from them often name surprisingly found harmony of a natural landscape and architectural constructions which at the same time are in harmony with the world of the person. It is shown both in rhythms, and in sizes, and in features of visual perception, and in speed of moving on paths of park as on foot, and on horses or in crews. The keystone to success was a choice already the place with hilly, but a landscape not having strong contrasts. Correct understanding of the nature, skill in the best way to reveal its opportunities - one it already was a merit of founders of park.

Doubtless success it is possible to consider idea to use a valley of the river Slavjanka as a basis of a composition. Turns and different height of its coast have allowed so harmoniously to compare with strict and clear constructions under the architectural forms to the vegetation allocated from a large forest or specially in it introduced.

Trees in Pavlovsk park in itself amaze with bright beauty as it happens in gardens southern the country. They are similar to paints in a palette of the painter which, mixing up and being compared, create the harmonious whole so value of this or that component sometimes is difficult to allocate, more likely.

In interrelation of all details that surprising force of influence of Pavlovsk park on the visitor also lays. Stretched on the area in six hundred hectares the park has areas, very excellent among themselves: from shady wood footpaths in the Valley of ponds up to the wide, open spaces of the White birch. However at transition from one area in so similar to it next never arises sensations of hit in other park – all is connected in one organic whole.
