KIZHI - one of 1369 islands of Onega lake in Kareliya. The abundance of large forests in Kareliya, and in general in the North of Russia has caused wide development of wooden architecture. The brightest monuments of wooden architecture are many-domed temples of a country churchyard Kizhi in which severe power walls is combined with refinement of a silhouette and shadow wood-picture covered chapters.
The 22-headed Preobrazhenskiy church has been constructed in 1714, 9-headed покровская church in 1764. Plastic, picturesque constructions on a silhouette are superb entered in a landscape and make harmonious, unique ensemble on beauty. Besides they are made without uniform (!!!) a nail and a screw.
Per 1960 Kizhi have been transformed into memorial estate of national wooden architecture and ethnography of Kareliya. On small space of island churches, chapels, country houses, baths, barns, smithies and other economic constructions are presented. They are transported on island from different villages of Kareliya and help to recreate that historical background which accompanied the Karelian country churchyards in the past. Last years the island Kizhi became a place of carrying out of colorful folklore holidays and Days of national crafts.
