Island Valaam – the biggest island in group Valaamsky of the islands which are being a northwest part of Ladoga lake. Islands Valaamsky are combined simple stones and diabases. The most part of islands is covered by coniferous woods. The island Valaam till now has kept unique and severe northern country and a simple life of these places.

Valaam – one of monuments of Russian church architecture. On an extensive granite rock the ensemble of the Preobrazhensky monastery which has been based Novgorod's people in the beginning of XIV century is spread. Being on border of the Novgorod possession, the monastery served as a fortress and many times reflected attacks of Swedes. In 1611 has been destroyed by Swedes. The monastery is restored under Peter's I decree in 1715. The monastery was known for the strict charter. It was used as monastic prison.

Except for a monastery on island there is a set of small monasteries. Near to the Preobrazhensky cathedral 3 small monasteries are located: White, Yellow and Red. To monasteries the picturesque road decorated on the one hand by high pines, with another limited by coast of Ladoga lake conducts. In the most beautiful places cost and crosses. The roads constructed by monks are interesting. On them water never is late. On island Valaam it is possible to see and learn a lot of interesting, to admire ancient monuments, simply to have a rest.
